The next Generation of the Lloyd family (Coriole) planting their flag in the Vale. A new project from brothers Duncan and Peter Lloyd, Dune wines sees them step out from the shadow of Coriole wines. Sourcing fruit from a single vineyard in the Blewitt Springs sub-region of Mclaren Vale. Organic in conversion, this sandy vineyard has been completely re-imagined since being purchased by the brothers in 2009. Planting and grafting over southern Mediterranean varietals has seen them create a unique range of blends alongside some classic and so2 free shiraz.

Deeply coloured; full, rich flavours of velvety black cherry, blackberry and spice all-sorts, with tannins so round they disappear in the black fruits. Oh-so-easy to swallow if that wasn’t forbidden.

I had an old Ford Escort once that blew its springs. I’ll fetch my coat.
Perfumed, nutty, meaty, black fruit. Medium to full-bodied, again quite umami with some nori flavour, choc-hazelnut and juicy dark cherry, dry spice, fleshy and creamy tannin, good length with it. Quite ferrous, but also floral. Lovely wine. I often ponder the absurdity of assigning scores to wines, so this is either 93 or 94 points. I can’t quite decide.

Dune Blewitt Springs Shiraz 2022
A meld of whole berries and a smidgeon of whole bunches spending 12 months in French oak (10% new). A controlled flow of reductive tension spiels iodine, nori and violet, while the Vale's punchy blueberry and darker fruit allusions are underlain by dried lavender and smoked meats. This is at once classy, full-weighted, generous and approachable, vying for the best value wine of regional class.
