Winery Details

Winemaker Ben (Mr.) Riggs follows the philosophy “iconic wines from iconic regions”. Whether it’s McLaren Vale Shiraz, Coonawarra Cabernet, or Clare Valley Riesling, his wines are expressing the essence of the vineyard and variety in a style that is big, rich and complex, but also with finesse, texture and elegance. In Ben’s own words: “Think Ella Fitzgerald – bombastic and powerful with a huge vocal range, yet with purity of tone and a gentle sensibility when needed.”

Mr. Riggs JFR McLaren Vale Shiraz 2020

A blend of three vineyards, Piebald Gully at 280m elevation abutting the Adelaide Hills; Gateway, a rare limestone site in Seaview; and the sandstone of Martins Vineyard, in Tatachilla. An unabashed old-school wine, drawing on chocolate-bourbon American oak accents (10%), in addition to the belt of cedar supplied by the French majority. Oodles of dark fruits, charcuterie, clove, anise, a waft of iodine reduction and gritty, almost sooty grape tannins. Full weighted, round and pretty straightforward. This should age in that hoisin-soy-lacquer sort of way.
