2020 - Seresin Estate | Marlborough

At Fesq & Company, we talk a lot about what we believe in, and what we’re going to present to the world. In our industry, it’s harder than ever to be clear and committed to what you stand for.

We think of our Portfolio as the shining example of everything Fesq & Company believes in. It’s full of family wineries, full of high-quality, often “benchmark” wines, it showcases the best of each region and wants you to learn more than just the prices of each wine.

There are few estates that embody our beliefs as much as Michael Seresin’s Marlborough estate - Seresin - and we are thrilled to expand our distribution of these wines from the 1st of November, 2019. We have worked with Michael for over 15 years, and are delighted to extend our sales and marketing work of the Seresin wines across the eastern seaboard.

We do what we do because we believe in wine. We believe that it’s one of the great sources of joy in the world. We believe in the people behind it, as well as those that appreciate it.

It's a joy to have Seresin as part of what we do.

The Estate

As visionary as it has been influential, Seresin was the first large-scale Marlborough estate to manage the strictest adherence to the tenets of biodynamics. Focusing on the whole as much as the parts. Grapes are one part of a farm, wine is one part of a meal.

It has consistently been a leader in the premium Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc category, so often flying in the opposite direction of their peers in the region, and all the better for it.

When the tale is told of fine wine from Marlborough, Seresin is a name that sits alongside the pioneers like Cloudy Bay, Fromm, Herzog, and small handful of others.

The Winemaking

Seresin was founded in 1993, and has had just three winemakers in this time. Seresin has always championed intense, low yielding styles. The Sauvignon notable for a small percentage of Semillon, as well as barrel fermented components.

The Pinot Noirs have always been at the cutting edge of styles and quality from the region. Over the last decade they have pushed the boundaries all the way to zero sulphur bottlings, settling on low-intervention, low extraction, cool ferment signatures, including a small percentage of whole-bunch.

Currently Tamra Kelly-Washington helms the winery and its stylistic choices. In her words - “For me, the benefits of farming organically and biodynamically are undeniable - particularly the quality, brightness and vibrancy of fruit. The focus at Seresin is very much honouring our philosophy with as much of a hands-off approach as possible.“

The Vineyard

Today, Seresin is a single-vineyard, estate wine producer. The Raupo Vineyard is 120ha, with 55ha planted to Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. The vineyard produces all Seresin labelled wines.

It was planted in 1995 and has been farmed biodynamically since.

It sits on what is called the southern slopes of Marlborough, in the Omaka Valley. This area has the gentle, rolling hills that boarder the region, and is considered the finest area, especially for Pinot Noir.

There’s no doubt this is one of the great vineyards of the region.

MOMO

The MOMO wines were created by Seresin to offer a more approachable and accessible range of wines from the Marlborough region.

Sticking to the core Seresin beliefs, the MOMO wines are organic, with grapes coming from local growers, working closely with the Seresin team. Both are fermented with indigenous yeast and minimal intervention in the winery. Look for more primary flavours - fruit forward and early drinking compared to the Seresin labels.

There are two wines in the MOMO range - a Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.

The Marlborough Sounds, which lie just north of the grape-growing area. With the Cloudy and Clifford bays to the east, it is a region maritime region with finite plantable land.
