Winery Details

“Love is an emotion that can be felt for an eternity. Gold is just material.”

Barr-Eden Estate is a storied piece of land situated at the crest of Mengler’s Hill, one of the highest points of viticulture in Australia. Well-known grape-grower Joel Mattschoss first acquired fruit from the site, which sits atop the ancient goldfields of the Eden, in 2014, to produce the first small batch Love Over Gold wine with Frenchman Pierre-Henri Morel. After the passing of the estate’s owner, Barossa icon, Bob McLean, in 2015, a venture began between the two, along with friends Michael Twelftree and Tim Hower, to become the new custodians of this special property of great pedigree.

Barr-Eden Estate Avenue to Gold Shiraz 2018
Wonderfully high-toned and detailed aromatics with tight dark and red plum and cherry fruit encased in spice and stone. There's a sense of space to the palate; fine yet plush, powdery tannins and bright hight-country acidity pulsing through the wine, finishing savoury and pure.

Deep crimson. Ripe blackberry, dark chocolate, mocha aromas with hints of sage and spice. Velvety textured wine with deep set blackberry, mulberry praline flavours, fine chocolaty textures, underlying tobacco, mocha notes and attractive mineral length. Finishes chocolaty firm. A very buoyant style with lovely fruit density and attack. Aged in concrete. 13.8% alc Drink now – 2030 Diam Cork

Aged in a concrete tank, the 2018 Avenue to Gold Shiraz features some strong notes of black olives, espresso and roasted meat set against a backdrop of plummy fruit and garnished with hints of wild herbs. From a top-#ight vintage, it's medium to full-bodied and amply concentrated, but it doesn't come across as heavy or overdone, instead being silky and refreshing on the palate and !nishing long, mouthwatering and savory. I suspect it will drink well for at least a decade.

Nicely done these wines, in that they don’t rely on new oak. Seems to be mainly about expressing the vineyard character.
Blackberry, blackcurrant, roast beef with sage and rosemary, with a dusting of pepper and spice. It’s fleshy and rich in slightly truffle-laced sweet dark fruit, some blood orange/amaro elements, fine dusty tannin, shitake mushroom and coffee bean umami flavours, and a perfumed and succulent finish of good length. Good.
