Coriole Lloyd Reserve Shiraz 2021
96 Points, James Suckling
"Ink black at its centre, deepest purple into the rim. Heady aromatics of blueberry, beef stock, black pepper and iodine. Palate is packed heavily with ripe and plush dark berry fruits, intertwined with peppery spices, dried herbs and bloody hints. Tannins wrap the body well, keeping it slightly compressed so tension and drive is maintained ensuring a phenomenal length to the finish." 96 Points, Stuart Knox, The Real Review
"From vines over 100 years old; matured in French oak, about 25% new. This feels the more ‘traditional’ of the 2021 reserve shiraz bottlings, with a typically dense core of dark fruits adorned with star anise, bitter chocolate, laurel, brewed coffee, turned earth and a gentle but apparent sheen of oak. It’s a powerful wine with substantial tannin, but the evolving stewardship of the younger Lloyds has been fine-tuning the portfolio for a little while now, with this suitably refined, if perhaps appealing to drinkers with a little nostalgia for headier times. Either way, it’s a keenly crafted and balanced wine of place." 96 Points, Marcus Ellis, Halliday Wine Companion
"It’s a bold wine, lavish black fruit, mocha oak, a little mint and hazelnut. Distinctly full-bodied, thick and ripe, blueberry, blackberry and ironstone, some bitter dark chocolate, quite some chew to grainy tannin, perhaps a little too much warmth from alcohol here, and maybe a little overt in fruit sweetness, but it has length and impact. It’s a lot of wine, and will suit those who seek a more lavish expression of Shiraz." 92+ Points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
The Lloyd family founded Coriole in 1967, and are considered pioneers in the McLaren Vale region, and visionaries in the planting of Italian and French varieties. Long before it was fashionable, Mark Lloyd developed vineyards of Sangiovese, Picpoul, Chenin Blanc, Nero d’Avola, and others, plus of course, Shiraz. They are considered one of the leading lights of the region.
