Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Côtes du Rhône Lieu-dit Clavin 2022
A stone's throw - or 3 metres to be exact - from the Châteauneuf boundary. This is the early maturing part of the terroir of slopes from this producer, producing tender and seductive wines, with the full bodied character borrowed from the adjacent 'les Trois Sources' Châteauneuf vineyard.
Blend of Grenache Noir (approx 75%), Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and total 5% of white varieties Bourboulenc, Clairette and White Grenache.

"Very deeply coloured Blackberry and a touch of prune. Decidedly full-bodied and concentrated, with robust, slightly grainy tannins. Has good density and freshness, and it's very concentrated. From a plot of vines next to the winery that lies just outside the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation boundaries, 25hl/ha; spends three months in concrete, 18 months in foudres and another year in bottle before release, they take the winemaking seriously. Very old vines, similar soils to Les Trois Sources- compact sand." 92 Points, Matt Walls, Decanter
"The Côtes-du-Rhône 2022 Clavin evokes aromas of dark wild berries, licorice, violets, dark cherries and a touch of chocolate, followed by a moderately weighted, layered and juicy palate with a delicate and sappy core of fruit and a long, ethereal finish. Bottled in March 2024, there is no reason to wait." 91 Points, Yohan Castaing, The Wine Advocate
"The 2022 Côtes Du Rhône Clavin is a little gem of a wine that has ripe darker cherry and blackberry fruits as well as some peppery, leather, and dried garrigue-like aromatics. It's medium-bodied, balanced, has fine tannins, and outstanding length. This is one of those wines that I always buy if I see it." 90 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
"The medium-bodied 2022 Côtes-du-Rhône Clavin is rather reductive on this encounter. Time in the glass brings forward red and black cherry elements, black plum and a dash of licorice. Hitting the palate with sweet-tasting fruit and good concentration, the polished 2022 can be enjoyed right after release." 90 Points, Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous
Organic and biodynamic approaches, minimal intervention and a great love for the terroir have always displayed the essence of Vieille Julienne. Jean-Paul Daumen took over from his father in 1992 and has since become one of the most iconic, innovative and respected producers of the Rhône. In addition to his Vieille Julienne label, Jean-Paul is also making wines under his biodynamic negociant label ‘Daumen’. Even if these wines have the intention to be more accessible, they are anything but simple. Read More
