Jane Eyre Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Vergelesses Rouge 2023
This is the cuvée I started my negociant with in 2011. The vineyard is located in the upper middle section on an eastern facing slope. The wine is always a mix of delicate fruit aromas with spicy undertones and a brambly edge with fine but firm tannins on the finish. 20% whole clusters and 20% new oak. Racked and assembled into tank after harvest and bottled 2nd December 2024”. Anyway, I do so like a SLB, such distinct character to the wines.
"Red fruit and cherries, mint, hazelnut and peanuts, spice, quite some perfume. It has a subtle earthiness, bright and succulent red fruits, nutmeg, and also some nutty grip to tannin, lively and so interesting, a little ‘mineral’ character with a finish of good length featuring strawberry and mixed spice. You pay the Burgundy tax here, for sure, though there’s so much to enjoy." 94 Points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
"Three barrels. Very pale in colour, yet magnificently fragrant. 20% whole bunch vinification only. This is really gorgeous in its light fragrant style, with the drier finish typical of a stemmy approach. Drink from 2027-2030. Tasted Dec 2024." Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy
Jane Eyre is an Australian micro-négociant who has been living and working in Beaune for more than 20 years. She made a distinct mark in Burgundy in 2021 when she was awarded a coveted Négociant of the Year award for her label of distinguished wines with a focus on Pinot Noir. Jane also returns to Australia each year to make a line of terroir-driven Pinot Noir bottlings from exceptional sites in Victoria and Tasmania. There is a lightness of touch thread to her wines from both continents that attracts a strong following.
