Dark cherry and blue fruits, some exotic spice, floral perfume, and most fetchingly a sort of ironstone/earthy/mineral character about it which is, I guess, kind of hard to describe though you’ll recognise what I’m talking about if you try the wine. It’s medium-bodied, gently sappy and savoury, shows a fair bit of spice, and pulls more into cherry and red fruits to taste, tannin is mouth-coating yet fine-grained and shapely and the finish is long with a subtle blood orange flavour. From three mature sites in the state’s north; wild ferment, then 10 months in French oak. As usual, some slightly darker fruits here, black and dark red, but composed and refined with it, as these wines always are, with transparency and detail favoured over opulence. There are some floral notes here, too, in the blue-to-purple zone, somewhat dusky, along with warm ground spices. This is the most generous of the regional trio – though the prior elegance qualification applies – supple and textural, with a sustained length. A selection of three vineyards in the north of Tasmania. 20% whole bunch and pressed directly into 500L barrels (20% new) after a 2-week maceration. Indigenous yeast ferment and unfined ahead of bottling.
"Pops with juicy cherry and redcurrant, aromatic herbs, rose petals, biscuit spice and roast red capsicum. It’s a lively wine, red fruit with a cranberry freshness to acidity, something of an earthy and dried herb character, a fine grainy grip to tannin, fresh strawberry and spiced peel closes a finish of brightness and fine length. Jane Eyre has become a reputable name in Burgundy, reaching great heights in 2021 after being awarded the prestigious Négociant of the Year award by La Revue du Vin de France. Each year she returns to her home state of Victoria, as well as Tasmania, to produce a line of terroir-driven Pinot Noirs in limited quantities from exceptional sites. There is a cohesive style across both the French and Australian Pinot Noirs, a thread of clarity and expression of vintage and place, that has built a strong following.
