Few stories can be told about modern Australian wine without mentioning the amazing rise of Margaret River, and Leeuwin Estate as a pioneer. Founded by Denis and Tricia Horgan in 1979, it is the star estate of Margaret River’s southern area; with a particular pedigree in its famed Chardonnay, but also relatively recent acclaim for Cabernet and Shiraz.
Leeuwin Estate Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2020
Deep red with a good tint of purple in the rim, the bouquet showing tobacco/cedar, nori/briar and peaty/iodine-like nuances. It's full-bodied and powerful, with lavish tannins, bright acidity and good concentration. Redcurrant and blackberry—red and black fruits both evident. A very smart and age worthy cabernet.

An elegant, classy wine and irresistible as a result. Perfectly composed flavours of cassis and currants, woodsy spices and leafy freshness with a lift of oak, all as one here. Beautiful fine tannins glide across the medium-bodied palate, the equally fine acidity cleansing and invigorating, and it finishes long and very pure. Gosh, this is excellent.

Leeuwin Estate Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2020
A stylish and poised cabernet from a year that was kind to most cabernet regions. The texture has been built in with 100% barrel fermentation and nine months in oak. Blackcurrant and cracked seashell graphite character control the nose. The palate is still quite firm held by the chalky tannins are fine and precise. A nice lick of oak with some nice bay leaf and black olive nuances. Stacks up rather well.

Leeuwin Estate Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2020
This is a sensational Art Series Cab. It is certainly my favourite vintage for a long while, and it all kicks off with the most sensitive of perfumes. Cooler on the nose and stunningly civilised on the palate, this is a composed wine with a long-lived stance and a pinch of delightful sourness on the finish. It is all in perfect harmony, and I sense this wine has astounding potential. While I haven’t scored any wines in this review on purpose, a couple of the bottles at this masterclass had me reaching for 19/20 scores, and this was one of them.

Cabernet has been on the up and up with Leeuwin over recent years… Blackcurrant, redcurrant jelly, baking spice and bay leaf, perhaps a little high on the camphor/menthol though it sits well enough with all the other assorted perfume. It’s svelte and slinky, such an even flow and regal carriage of flavour here, a fine graphite grip, rosehip and port wine jelly succulence, maybe some dark tobacco, with a fine finish of excellent length. Stylish. Effortless. Very good.
