Few stories can be told about modern Australian wine without mentioning the amazing rise of Margaret River, and Leeuwin Estate as a pioneer. Founded by Denis and Tricia Horgan in 1979, it is the star estate of Margaret River’s southern area; with a particular pedigree in its famed Chardonnay, but also relatively recent acclaim for Cabernet and Shiraz.

Leeuwin Estate Art Series Riesling 2023
I love the label, and the green bottle.
Lemongrass, lime leaf, lime and green apple, spearmint, with a saline bath salts perfume. It’s dry and crunchy, acidity is there too, though it’s kind of juicy, and the spicy and exotic mouth-perfume is really pleasing. It has a lime and green apple, and chalky texture on a finish of good length. A little petrol/mineral thing in the mix too. It’s a different expression of Riesling, for sure, but I really like it.

I have a soft spot for this wine – it’s from a region not renown for riesling; I love the green bottle and the John Olsen painting adorning it. It’s also a lovely drink. Fragrant with lemon blossom and jasmine and lightly flavoured with limes and lemons, green apple and fresh herbs. Not at all fruity, it’s dry with mouth-watering acidity, and there’s a cooling stoniness too.
