Few stories can be told about modern Australian wine without mentioning the amazing rise of Margaret River, and Leeuwin Estate as a pioneer. Founded by Denis and Tricia Horgan in 1979, it is the star estate of Margaret River’s southern area; with a particular pedigree in its famed Chardonnay, but also relatively recent acclaim for Cabernet and Shiraz.

Press Review

2022 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Shiraz
“Shiraz dominant, there is a dollop of both Viognier and Malbec (3% of each), in this stunning Margaret River Shiraz. 20% whole bunch and a total of eighteen months maturation in various formats of French oak. Deep magenta hue. Quite the savoury style, we have notes of licorice, animal skins, dry herbs, blackcurrants, cloves and a hint of graphite. Beautifully structured, this is seamless and seductive. There is a line of fine acidity, all leading to quite a complex style. Such exemplary balance here with excellent length. Enjoy over the next ten to fifteen years. A superb Margaret River Shiraz. The best in the region?” 96 Points, Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot

“The 2022 Art Series Shiraz is excellent. It is lush and persistent, with a sapid mid-palate and layers of spice and textural complexity. Very good. It remains bloody and mineral, characterized by savory tannins, pink peppercorns, nori, gravel and dried herbs, with pomegranate molasses, redcurrant and a hint of goji berry to boot. The tannins and the fruit are as one: the wine isn't encased by tannin, as so many are, rather, it IS tannin, in that the tannin exudes from its very core, like rays of sunshine. Good! Sealed under screw cap.” 95 Points, Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

“Pepper and spice and all things nice in wine that continues to evolve as it explores new possibilities. It’s medium bodied with a mix of red and blue fruits. Inspired by the wines of the Northern Rhone and the use of different oaks of different formats, which contribute to the subtlety and poise on the palate. An elegant wine with fune bony tannins and tremendous length. A touch of sage, spice and pepper with darker blueberry and plummy fruit. There is an incredible intensity and vibrancy here showing great length.” 95 Points, Ray Jordan

Leeuwin Estate Art Series Shiraz 2022
A wonderful dark purple colour. Floral and spicy with flashes of black pepper, dark plums and redcurrants. The palate is tightly coiled and there’s a nuttiness alongside the cedary oak, licorice and hot stone/iodine characters with an astringency throughout and raspy tannins in tow. Best to decant if opening now but this is still a baby, so more time in bottle is needed to allow it to grow up.

Leeuwin Estate Art Series Shiraz 2022
This is 94% Shiraz, 3% Viognier and 3% Malbec.
Juicy, sort of dried cranberry, ripe raspberry, apricot, cocoa and coffee bean, musk sticks and pimento. Medium-bodied, a subtle syrupy richness, some meat and pepper, kind of silky, though tannin has a nice grain and gently chew, acidity feels slightly white winey, and the finish is sweet red fruit and chalky grip. Leave it for a while.
