Reviews & Accolades

Mount Pleasant Mothervine Pinot Noir 2023

"MB: Has a smoky, dusty overlay that does old spice cupboard and turned earth and gravelly rocky notes and graphite with dark cherry and dried leaf too. Quite dry reddy to taste, edgy acidity, juiciness through the finish but a leaner profile and a distance from pinosity. In that, pleasing drinking with decent structure. 90 points

KS: I’m pretty sure I pinched some of that fruit straight from the vine earlier last year and it was hot and the fruit was sweet. Love both, the heat and the sweet. Roses and rose jam first, violet pastille, compact powder, lipstick and red liquorice. Power is here in the intensity of flavour and the back palate is where it peaks. Textural stream of tannins, a bit sticky and earthy-gritty. It’s not all smooth but with warming black pepper, peppermint, cumin and cinnamon-choc finish. It’s a good Pinot but perhaps missies on the finesse this year, reflecting the warmth of the vintage but the flavour intensity does not disappoint and it’s reflected in the vines age. 92 points

GW: Dark cherry, earth, spice, and under that some rosy perfume, as slight peppery and dusty perfume. Medium-bodied, quite dark and brooding, with grainy tannins, distinct earth and spice. Finish is firm. Needs some time to come around and relax a bit and I reckon more red fruits will rise. Good though, albeit in a more robust style this vintage. 92+ points." 92+ Points, The Wine Front

"Medium depth red with a tint of purple and stewed plum/spice/cola and earth aromatics. The wine is firm and tense in the mouth, with measured tannins that would benefit from a bit more time to relax. It's a bit light on pinosity but is a good lighter-weighted red wine." 90 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review

About this Producer

The famed estate of Mount Pleasant has a well-storied past, founded by the visionary of Australian wine, Maurice O’Shea. It includes plantings of ancestral vines of 1880, as well as Australia’s oldest mother vine Pinot Noir planted in 1921 by O’Shea himself. It is the home of some of the first fine wines of Australia, and with just five winemakers over its 100-year history, it has maintained its status as a benchmark of the Hunter classics, Shiraz and Semillon.
