Winemaker Ben (Mr.) Riggs follows the philosophy “iconic wines from iconic regions”. Whether it’s McLaren Vale Shiraz, Coonawarra Cabernet, or Clare Valley Riesling, his wines are expressing the essence of the vineyard and variety in a style that is big, rich and complex, but also with finesse, texture and elegance. In Ben’s own words: “Think Ella Fitzgerald – bombastic and powerful with a huge vocal range, yet with purity of tone and a gentle sensibility when needed.”

Aside from the millennial anthem paired with the generation X reference, everything seems in place. The fruit was fermented coolly in a vinomatic, then pressed to tanks at a maximum of 8% alcohol to finish. That time in the roto-fermenter has extracted ample tannin and colour, while there’s also a levity of squishy blue and red fruits, floral notes and briary wild blackcurrant. There’s a bit of kelp and iodine, anise and pepper, too. Perhaps the titling is more artful than first thought, with a bit of the dark underbelly of gen X and the purported progressive joie de vivre of millennials. Either way, it’s a fine offering.
