Mr. Riggs JFR McLaren Vale Shiraz 2021
The ultimate tribute to Ben Riggs' late father, the JFR showcases pristine fruit with dark red berries, hints of spice, earth, and leather, with seamlessly integrated oak.
Mr. Riggs JFR McLaren Vale Shiraz 2021
"Gracefully opulent and alluring, the wine shows dark plum, sweet cherry, vanilla, clove and cedar characters on the nose, followed by a beautifully layered palate offering refined texture with gorgeously melded tannins. Captivating and lingering. At its best: 2025 to 2039." 95 Points, SAM KIM, WINE ORBIT
"This is a blend from three McLaren Vale vineyards from three distinct subregions. Each of the vineyard wines was kept separate until bottling. The cooler Piebald Gully fruit seems to contribute to the elegance and vibrancy with its bright fruit characters. It’s full-bodied but refined and elegant, displaying spicy red fruit aromas and a rich, juicy, dark fruit palate. It’s largely been in French oak, but 20% American oak has added a sweetness to the middle palate. Impressive wine and great value in the cellar." 95 Points, Ray Jordan Reviews
"From three sites: Piebald Gully in Clarendon, Gateway in Seaview and Martins vineyard in Tatachilla. 80% French oak, 20% American, with 35% new oak. This is classically styled Vale shiraz, full and generous, though with a sophistication of making a wine of class over girth. Dark berries and deeply ripe red ones, red plum, cacao, new leather, vanilla, salted chocolate, salumi and clove. Silky of texture without feeling slick, this is sweet fruited and enveloping, a winter-warmer style well achieved." 94 Points, Marcus Ellis, Halliday Wine Companion
"A core of bright red and ripe raspberries and mulberries. Soft liquorice encases
the briary notes with sage and rosemary stem. A touch of cassis and white pepper.
Silken in its tannins and laser focus acidity. Punchy and youthful, this still has a way
to go in its career. Oak is significant but not a distraction, fruit is front and centre.
An excellent value wine." 94 Points, The Vintage Journal
Winemaker Ben (Mr.) Riggs follows the philosophy “iconic wines from iconic regions”. Whether it’s McLaren Vale Shiraz, Coonawarra Cabernet, or Clare Valley Riesling, his wines are expressing the essence of the vineyard and variety in a style that is big, rich and complex, but also with finesse, texture and elegance. In Ben’s own words: “Think Ella Fitzgerald – bombastic and powerful with a huge vocal range, yet with purity of tone and a gentle sensibility when needed.”
