"A lean and fine-boned pinot noir, and good for it. Shows scents of just-ripe red cherry, cranberry, pomegranate juice with woody spice, pencil-shaving whiffs, some turned earth and dried herbs. The palate is sinewy but has a light juiciness too, more red cherry, cranberry, a lick of truffle and some splintery, woody spices. This does a good job of restrained pinot." 90 Points, Mike Bennie, Halliday Wine Companion.
"This wine is named after the mother of Ben Riggs – Valerie – who is now 90 years old. It smells of Campari and flowers, comes draped in herbs, pushes bright cherry-berry fruit scents and flavours at every turn, and is well shaped through the finish. Indeed the finish feels grapey, which is pretty much never a bad thing. As a result this drinks pretty well." 90 Points, Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front
Winemaker Ben (Mr.) Riggs follows the philosophy “iconic wines from iconic regions”. Whether it’s McLaren Vale Shiraz, Coonawarra Cabernet, or Clare Valley Riesling, his wines are expressing the essence of the vineyard and variety in a style that is big, rich and complex, but also with finesse, texture and elegance. In Ben’s own words: “Think Ella Fitzgerald – bombastic and powerful with a huge vocal range, yet with purity of tone and a gentle sensibility when needed.”
