Pegasus Bay Merlot Cabernet 2019
"Big, brooding, earthy, Bordelais style with red currant fruit, bitter chocolate orange, pipe tobacco and a distinct tomato-leaf herbal note. It certainly has a lot going on. One judge found the wine full-bodied, nicely weighted with rich, chewy tannins and positive length while the other thought the tannins a little too extractive for the weight of the wine." 93 Points, Stephen Bennett MW, Lynnette Hudson, New Zealand Wine Rater
"From estate-grown vines over 30 years old, the 2019 vintage of this Waipara Valley, North Canterbury red is a Merlot-based blend, with smaller portions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Cabernet Franc. It was matured for 18 months in French oak barriques (25% new). Deeply coloured, it is fragrant, with rich, well-ripened plum and blackcurrant flavours, showing very good complexity, gentle tannins, and a supple, finely textured finish." 4,5 Stars, Michael Cooper, Michael Cooper’s Buyer’s Guide, www.michaelcooperwines.com
Pegasus Bay is a family-owned and run business within the Waipara Valley, led by patriarch and Neuroscientist Ivan Donaldson. Free draining and low fertility soils produce low yields of high quality, flavourful grapes, which fully express the qualities of Pegasus Bay’s unique setting. The range of wines is led by diverse and ageworthy styles of Pinot Noir and Riesling, with highly expressive Semillon, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer and Malbec Cabernet Sauvignon blends complementing the portfolio.
